Milking It – A Workshop on Milk, Contradictions, and Knowledge

Milk is full of contradictions.

It nourishes, yet excludes. It’s natural, yet processed. It’s tightly regulated, yet deeply emotional. And behind every glass is a web of varied perspectives on milk—from farmers, scientists, mothers, regulators, and campaigners.

Join us on Friday 11th July at The Museum of English Rural Life for Milking It, a workshop exploring these tensions. We'll ask:

What can we learn about milk—and its future—by looking at how different kinds of knowledge conflict and coexist?

📍 The MERL, University of Reading

🕚 11am – 3pm (with lunch & 1-hour online session)

📂 Includes a tour of and access to The MERL’s incredible dairy collections

We’re inviting milk producers, researchers, artists, historians, policy people, and enthusiasts to share contradictions from their own work and lives. No academic background required—just a willingness to reflect, share, and be part of the conversation.

We sadly do not have any in person spaces left, but welcome you to join us online!
